Description

Eclipse Shades® Solar Filter – Our Black Polymer Solar Filters are a low cost alternative to our aluminum cell and glass filters. They have been designed with quality and cost in mind. They can be used on telescopes, binoculars, cameras and finder scopes. This is the same high quality material you have come to know in our Eclipse Shades® Safe Solar Eclipse Glasses. Unlike other solar filters, our black polymer solar film will provide a more pleasing and natural Yellow-Orange image of the sun. This color also offers more contrast and clarity than other solar films. The advantages of this material is that it is stronger and more durable than other thin film solar filters. The actual filtering properties are protected within the substrate. Patent Pending

How to size a Filter to fit your Telescope or Binoculars:

Your solar filter cell fits over the outside of the telescope or lens holder. This is the same when covering a pair of binoculars or a finder scope. Measure the outside diameter (O.D) of the device and choose the filter size with the inside dimension (I.D.) of the cell larger than the lens holder. Do not choose a filter the same size as your O.D. This will be too tight and not allow room for the felt lining which you will use to tightly fit the filter to your device. Felt tape is included for custom fitting with each filter.

Warranty:

The safety of this product is guaranteed by ensuring the coating has a transmission of 0.001% or less. The R-G solar film, 2+ Solar Glass Filter and Black Polymer is tested before shipment. If the film or filter has arrived damaged it will be replaced free of charge. Do not use any film that shows any form of defect. Please contact us for further return instructions. All solar filters are covered by a limited liability warranty from defects in material and workmanship.

solar filter for 12x50 monocular

I ordered this filter for my 12x50 monocular which measures about 63 mm outer diameter at the objective lens. Although it is a little large at 70mm, the included felt strip allowed me to make a snug fit and the filter does not fall off. I already tried it out and got a Great image of the sun at 12 power. Saw a sunspot!

I'm all set for the total eclipse in Ohio in April 2024!!

Here's Looking At You Kid!

I actually bought two different filter sizes. The 70mm filter for my Celestron DX 12X56 and a 60mm filter for my wide's Bushnell H2O 10X42. My eyes are 77 years old and both have a intraocular lens (IOL) that gives me vision that is good enough to drive without glasses, My IOL lens do have just a touch of birefringence and that tends to make the edges of things just a little fuzzy; so, take my opinions on the sharpness of images with a grain-of-salt.

For the price I think that the filters are well made and I especially like the fact that the solar filters are recessed in from the outside edge as this goes a long way in preventing scratches on the filter. I like that both sets of filters are completely blackened on the inside. The felt strips that come with the filters for sizing the filter to your specific optical device are a little tricky to figure out, you just grab the black felt and rip off the white cover paper. After struggling with the first filter the next three filters were sized smoothly.

My viewing technique is always the same, I focus the the binoculars on a terrestrial object then put on the filters and look at the sun. I look at the edge of the sun and get to my final best focus and then move on to sunspots. The 10X binoculars shows the sunspots as extended black objects but no detail; the 12X binoculars start to show detail on the larger sunspots. Both binoculars give views that are a tremendous improvement over any 1X solar eye shield. Bracing or tripod…
