What is ISO certification for eclipse viewers?
The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent, non-governmental organization made up of members of international standards bodies from 176 countries all over the world. The ISO 12312-2:2015 certification pertains specifically to solar eclipse eyewear.
In order to meet the ISO certification, solar viewers must filter out 99.999 percent of intense visible light and block nearly all infrared radiation.
Is it ever safe to view solar events without eye protection?
The only time when it’s safe to view solar events without eye protection is during the full totality phase of a total solar eclipse. The full totality phase is the brief period when the sun is fully blocked by the moon. Otherwise, eye protection must be worn at all times.

In order to ensure everyone’s safety when viewing solar events, you must only use eclipse glasses that meet all safety standards. Trusted by the AAS and NASA, our solar viewers and Eclipse Shades® are "CE" Certified, meeting standards for transmission Module B EU Type-Examination Certificate for the requirements of Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and EU Type Examination by CCQS Certification Services Limited, EU Notified Body, Number 2834 www.CCQS.com.
They’re also certified to meet the requirements for ISO 12312-2:2015 (EN ISO 12312-2:2015).
They meet the 2012 Transmission Requirements of EN 1836:2005 and AS/NZS 1338.1:1992 for eclipse filters (Queensland Directive).
Our “Silver/Black Polymer” lenses block out 99.999% of intense visible light, 100% of IR, and 100% of ultraviolet light.
